Help with Spacevista for Mac
Requirements
macOS 26 Tahoe or later, including macOS 27 Golden Gate. Spacevista is free on the Mac App Store.
Getting started
- Pick a drive in the sidebar and allow access when macOS asks.
- Press Start Scan (⌘R). Press ⌘. to stop.
- Click a folder bubble to open it; the breadcrumbs or ⌘[ take you back. Switch to Tree View for a ranked list.
Common questions
- What’s in “System Data”? Real folders: caches, developer tools, simulators, backups, app containers. Scan your startup disk and look inside Library, your home folder’s Library, and hidden folders such as .cache — Spacevista counts them all.
- Why does it ask for permission? It runs in the App Sandbox and can only read what you grant. Nothing leaves your Mac.
- Where do deleted items go? To the Trash, unless you choose Delete Permanently, which shows the size and item count and asks first. The folder you scanned itself can’t be deleted from the app.
- Why don’t the sizes match Finder exactly? Spacevista measures space actually used on disk and never counts hard-linked or firmlinked data twice, so its totals can differ slightly from the file sizes Finder lists.
- A drive I just connected isn’t listed. The sidebar updates by itself when drives are connected or ejected. If one is still missing, check it appears in Finder.
- How do I add the widget? Right-click the desktop, choose Edit Widgets, search for Spacevista and pick the small or medium size.
